Visions of Joannas

This blog is named after a Joanna Newsom song, in particular the lines:

“ I saw a life and called it mine

I saw it drawn so sweet and fine

And I had begun to fill in all the lines

Right down to what we’d name her”

It seemed apt, especially after we found out we’re having a girl. It has more recently come to my attention that there’s a welsh band out there called Joanna Gruesome, in either tribute to or pisstake of her. Although having read an interview them, it seems to be more the former.

Joanna Newsom’s opinion on this tribute remains, as yet, unclear. Fortunately, they are rather good, if entirely different to Newsom herself. Fuzzed up guitars and alternating shouty or sugary-melodic vocals remind me of a lot of bands I have previous loved. The Riot Grrrl influence is apparent, not least in their spelling of “yr” and “grrrl”

A favourite song on their album is hard to pick, but I think “Do You Really Wanna Know Why Yr Still In Love With Me?” edges it.
