A friend, who visited Frida for the first time at the weekend, mentioned that she had bought another friend a Foo Fighters babygrow for her newborn. Her newborn promptly vomited on it the moment it was put on (I expect this was coincidence rather than an early expression of musical taste), then grew out of it before she had chance to wear it again.
Some of my friends have assumed I will be rushing out to buy music related clothing for Frida. In fact, I think I used to look down a little on people who would put their one year old child in a Ramones t-shirt, thinking there was something wrong with them pushing their musical taste onto their children. Now I realise that very young children either aren’t aware, or don’t care what they’re wearing, so long as they’re comfortable their parents can put them in whatever the hell they like.
Anyway, my friend’s tale had me googling band merchandise for babies that same evening. I still feel a little bit conflicted about it, but I strongly suspect that if I found an especially cute Pixies outfit for Frida my opinion would be swayed. What was interesting to note was that the vast majority of baby outfits I found were for hard rock/metal/punk bands. If you are in the market for an AC/DC sleepsuit for your newborn, you will not be short of options. Not quite sure why it is, it could be that those kind of bands have especially devoted fans and sell a lot of merchandise of all kinds. Or it could be there is something especially amusing about the contrast between cute baby and heavy music (although when tantruming, Frida is a lot louder and angrier than any metal band I’ve heard)
I did find a few interesting items, but most of the bands I really love are clearly either not popular enough, or in the wrong genre to have moved into the baby merchandise business. I am however very tempted by an album I found of lullaby versions of Pixies songs. I’m trying to tell myself it will help get Frida to sleep, but in my heart I know it is really for my own amusement.
