My introduction into the world of noisy children’s toys begins. Frida has a new toy which plays no less than 22 different tunes, including such delights as Frere Jacque, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Bicycle Made For Two. I now have no doubt that these will be the songs stuck in my head for the foreseeable future.
I do have some first hand knowledge of how difficult it it to remove children’s songs, with their simple catchy melodies, from your brain. Once, a few years back, my wife and I babysat for a friend’s daughter, who was maybe 9 months old. She woke screeching in the night, and being complete novices we had no idea how best to calm her down. We tried putting her musical mobile on for a whole which kind of did the trick, but three years later the tune the mobile played still pops into my head from time to time.
So there’s probably not much I can do to avoid these 22 tunes running around my mind other than listen to a lot of other music so my brain has a variety of source material, but for now I’ll leave you with the only one of the 22 to have been covered by Neil Young (to my knowledge).
