A new release from PJ Harvey is always exciting, and ‘The Wheel’ is no exception. It also stands as firm rebuttal to those who claim that no-one makes political music any more. It’s inspired by Harvey’s visits to Kosovo, and both the past ethnic cleansing and current refugee crisis that have taken place there.
The ominous, building nature of the track fits precisely the mood created by the subject matter and the lyrics, but it is the repeated line “I heard it was 28,000” in the lyrics that is most haunting. A dark, beautiful song in its’ own right, but the words of The Wheel are what makes it vital and important.
