I can’t say I’ve been all that attentive to Tricky’s career over the 20 years since his breakthrough album Maxinquaye. I’ve heard the odd track here or there and listened to a couple of the albums, but never loved what I heard quite enough to be drawn back in.
Until that is, I heard this thrilling track on the radio a couple of weeks ago. I didn’t recognise the female rapper on lead vocals, but it immediately caught my attention, catchy, short and perfectly formed. Glancing up at my digital radio display to find out who it was, I was very surprised to read the name Tricky (in collaboration with Chinese rapper Ivy). On closer listen, some of his signature sounds are there, along with his backing vocals, but sounding more vital than for many years.
