Track of the week : The Veldt – Sanctified

I must admit that The Veldt are a band who had passed me by until now. Formed by the Chavis brothers Daniel and Danny back in the late 1980s, they released three albums on different labels in the 1990s, enjoying underground success, but maybe not quite as much as they deserved. They then recorded as Apollo Heights in the 2000s, but are now back as The Veldt with their EP ‘The Shocking Fuzz of Your Electric Fur’.

And what a marvellous record it is too, combining elements of soul, shoegaze, dreampop and electronica, sounding unlike anything I’ve heard before (although you have to wonder if TV on the Radio learnt a trick or two from them). Opening track Sanctified exemplifies everything that is great about the EP, a dreamy, gorgeous number which also manages to be catchier than you would imagine from a near 7 minute shoegaze track.
