Track of the week : Neil Young – After the Gold Rush

I was lucky enough to see Neil Young at the First Direct Arena in Leeds on Friday. I always knew he was supposed to be kind of a big deal, but I never knowingly listened to his music until my mid-twenties when, on a whim, I bought his album ‘After the Gold Rush’

It was the title track from that album that made me realise a) that all that I had read about his supposed genius was in fact correct b) how much he had influences more recent bands I loved (Mercury Rev being one that immediately sprang to mind)

So, to see him walk on stage, solo, sit down at the piano, and perform this song was a great moment, even from my seat way up in the roof of the arena. If you’re new to his music, this is as good as a place as any to start.
