I’m a big fan of songs being the correct length. By which I mean, rather than trying to force every song into the same 4 minute verse chorus verse structure, if a song needs to be 10 minutes long, let it be 10 minutes long. If it only needs to be 2 minutes, let it be 2 minutes. Or in the case of ‘Bummer Deal’ 45 seconds.
I know little of Diners, but their recent mini-album ‘A Soft Day’ is full of short, joyous blasts of indie-pop, none more so than the super-short ‘Bummer Deal’. Rather than verse-chorus-verse, it’s basically intro-verse-outro and we’re done, but it manages to cram in more fun, melody and invention than some bands do in an album.
